Carina NicHaouchine
Carina’s films have and screened at festivals including Edinburgh International Film Festival and Glasgow Short Film Festival. She directed her first short documentary, Ululation, in 2018 through the Scottish Documentary Institute’s Bridging the Gap scheme, which screened internationally and won a John Byrne Award. Carina holds a BA in Digital Film and Television from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. In 2019, participated in a year-long documentary training scheme with OTOXO Productions in Barcelona.
Carina often self-shoots and edits and has made films in collaboration with arts projects and charities from around the U.K.
She was selected as a ‘New Voice’ in 2021 by the Scottish Documentary Institute, was a recent participant in Film in Mind’s supervision group for emerging filmmakers and Reclaim The Frame’s Filmonomics 8.
She is currently working on her first feature documentary, Dungeon Masterhood, with Peabody Award-nominated producer Steven Lake, funded by Screen Scotland and part of Sheffield DocFest’s MeetMarket 2025. And is developing a second feature, Gorse: an act against nature through Sheffield Doc Fest’s Queer Realities Director’s Lab, SDI’s Write Now Fund and UnionDocs Summer Development Lab.
Shaping narratives from reality and songwriting are major influences in her writing work which is primarily in short and long-form fiction. Carina holds a Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow. Her work has accompanied exhibitions and has been featured in various arts publications including the Alchemy Experiment and Middleground magazine.
She published the book Machado: A Berber folk tale, which is the first English translation of Algerian, Berber folk stories and is currently working on her debut novel.
